Bernard Houndstooth Scarf
With the holiday hustle bustle coming to a close, I've been craving a simple crochet project that I could cozy up to without too much brainpower needed. This is the concept I had in mind when I put together my December pattern suites, and as I was revisiting those patterns I got inspired to design another piece in the same vein. With that, I'm so excited to introduce the Bernard Houndstooth Scarf! This unisex accessory is available as a free pattern below, or you can purchase the ad-free printable version here. You can also purchase a kit from Lion Brand here (note that the exact kit is currently backordered, but I've included some yarn sub ideas below).
I first came up with the idea for the Bernard Houndstooth Scarf when Lion Brand sent me a few skeins of their Ferris Wheel yarn to try out. It is incredibly soft and comes in 12 different colorways, and it felt perfect for an oversized accessory that you'd want to wrap up in. I chose to tone down the color changes a bit by striping the yarn with Touch of Alpaca, which blends lovely with the Ferris Wheel. I first used the crochet houndstooth stitch for my Houndstooth Cabin Throw in 2017 (also part of this month's crochet pattern suite!) and I decided to use it again for this piece as I just love the way it transforms simple stripes into such an interesting pattern using only two basic stitches!
Although the pattern is quite simple and repetitive, it's kept interesting and addicting due to the mesmerizing color changes of the Ferris Wheel yarn. It's so fun to watch it fade in and out of tones and meander through the scarf.
Houndstooth has such a dapper sophistication to it, and due to its masculine appeal it makes this scarf perfectly suitable for the men in your life too. I wanted to put a modern spin on this distinguished classic, so I expanded the silhouette and made the scarf a bit oversized. The result is a super cozy wide scarf that can also be worn as a wrap/shawl.
As I mentioned above, the Lion Brand kit for the Bernard Houndstooth Scarf is unfortunately backordered due to the popularity of the Ferris Wheel yarn in the Morning Java colorway, so I've put together some combos of other colorways and yarns that would create a similar look using this pattern. Check them out here (keep in mind you’ll need approx 625 yds of each yarn, and as these all have different yardage you’ll want to check and make sure you grab enough!):
Whichever color combo you choose, you'll want to dive right into this project and I can promise it will be hard to put back down! I can't wait to start another one myself, probably in one of the combos I've shown above!
This is an easy level crochet pattern and the techniques involved are single crochet, double crochet, and working in tapestry crochet to carry along an unused color.
