Color Theory: Duo Granny Bandana

Granny squares are still going strong in the fashion scene, and for good reason! These iconic little squares add a touch of whimsy and a splash of color in all the best ways. My newest take on the classic motif is the Duo Granny Bandana - a mini triangle scarf you can wear two different ways! Scroll down for the free pattern, purchase a printer-friendly PDF of the pattern here, or purchase the kit with all the Color Theory yarn you’ll need here.

Not only is this project multi-functional, it also uses only a small amount of each color of yarn, so it would be easy to whip up two or three in the same color scheme but with the colors in different orders and hand out the extras to your besties! They make such a cute gift.

If I wear anything on my head it’s usually a wide-brimmed hat, so my favorite way to wear this accessory is as a mini neck kerchief but I love that it can be worn on the head for those who prefer that style.

I am always amazed at how the same combo of colors can look so different depending on the way you lay them out, and this is very apparent with this project. Different colors will pop and appear dominant depending on how you arrange them, and it makes for such a cute collection of bandanas that all match but have their own personality.

This is an easy level crochet pattern and the techniques involved are single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, working into chain spaces, and working both flat and in the round.

Notes: Bandanas are made up of three squares and three triangles worked individually and seamed together. Edging and ties are worked after construction. Squares are worked in joined, turned rounds and triangles are worked in turned rows. To change colors in squares, work the final slip stitch of the previous round with the new color. To change colors in triangles, work the final yarn over of the last dc in the previous row with the new color. Assign each color A, B, C, D, and E and follow chart or instructions as written. Change the order of the colors for a different look.

Edging:

With RS facing up, join color E at top left corner of bandana. Ch 1 and sc in each st to last st along this side edge before bottom point, sc 2 in each of next 2 sts (these are the 2 sts on either side of the bottom point), sc in each st along next side edge.

Fasten off.

Ties and top edging:

With WS facing, ch 68, then sc evenly across top edge of bandana, then ch 69. Turn, and starting in 2nd ch from hook, hdc across ch, sc in each st along top edge of bandana, hdc across next ch.

Fasten off. Secure and weave in all ends.
