Why is everything cuter in mini size!? Every time I see a hand dyed yarn collection with a mini set I am so tempted to buy it, even though I'm never quite sure what to do with it. The baby skeins and colors all lined up just look so freakin' cute it's hard to contain myself. So when Lion Brand told me they had a limited run of Color Theory minis I knew it was my time! I immediately jumped at the opportunity and got to designing.
I've been wanting to design something Missoni-inspired for awhile now, so this felt like the perfect time to go for it. As I started swatching though, I realized that in order to make something the scale I was looking for, I'd have to use a very loose, open stitch to cover as much surface area as possible with each mini skein. Tight Missoni zigzags just weren't going to cut it, so I started playing around with some other ideas.
I landed on this eyelet-style wave stitch that instantly reminded me of Coogi sweaters, which is kind of Missoni-adjacent, and I was smitten. Coogi is an Australian label that was popularized in the 90s and reminds me of my teens so this design feels very nostalgic. And before you ask - no, Cosby sweaters were not Coogis (they were Perry Ellis). Notorious BIG, on the other hand, did "stay Coogi down to the socks" (a lyric from One More Chance / Stay With Me) and claimed that "every cutie with a booty bought a Coogi" (a lyric from Hypnotize), haha.
There was some trial and error to get the dimensions the right size and make sure that the wrap was big enough and used up as much of each mini skein. I think it ended up being the perfect size and I love having a piece that shows the full array - er, spectrum - of colors in the Color Theory palette! However, I think this design would be equally as cute with any number of colors if you have scraps you want to use up instead of going with the mini set.
This is an easy level crochet pattern and the techniques involved are single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, treble crochet, chaining and skipping stitches, working into chain spaces, and working into the back loop only of a stitch.

Wrap is worked flat, side to side. Turn at the end of each row. The ch 4 at the beginning of every 4th row counts as a treble stitch. To change colors, work the last yarn over of the previous row with the new color. Tails at the beginning and end of each row can be incorporated into fringe rather than woven in.

FRINGE
Cut seven 12”/30.5cm strands of each color.
Holding three strands together, attach fringe using larks head knots to the ends of each row on the side where the tail ends are, in corresponding colors, incorporating the ends at the same time. To do so, fold the three strands in half and use the crochet hook to pull the folded loop through a space at the end of the row, then draw the ends of the strands and the corresponding color ends left at the end of the rows through the loop to create the larks head knot. Trim fringe to desired length. Rep on other end of wrap, this time holding 4 strands together.
