Kicking off the year with a project that was one of my most requested designs from 2023 - a crochet version of my MODular Knit Quilt! The MODular Crochet Quilt is nearly identical to its knit sister, with the same modular log cabin construction, only this time it’s worked up in speedy double crochet. I chose a warmer color palette for this one to contrast with the cool tone knit throw, and I think it might be my new fave combo! Like the knit version before it, the MODular Crochet Quilt is a minimalist, modern take on the traditional Americana style quilt. When I released the knit pattern last February, it instantly became one of my all-time favorite designs, and I already envisioned doing a crochet version before it was so highly requested!

Another reason I was so excited to create the MODular Crochet Quilt was the opportunity to try out another color combo! While I will always love my blues and greys, I’ve been leaning more into warmer palettes as of late and I couldn’t wait to put this combo together. I am obsessed with how the pinky oranges and greens complement each other. Sometimes the color palette of a project is the most motivating part as it’s so fun to watch it come together as you work. I love how each block of this blanket contains the same colors but in different orders which makes each one unique!

This time of year is so perfect for big blanket projects like this, is it not? The holidays are over and after months of making little handmade gifts for others, it’s so fun to indulge in a big cozy make that you can keep for yourself. If your climate is anything like mine it’s also freezing outside, so snugging up to a chunky squishy project like this while the snow falls outside is just what the doctor ordered.

Although it is a big project, the MODular Crochet Quilt is make up of six individual blocks, so you’ll have mini achievements along the way to keep you motivated. As I mentioned before, each block is unique and it’s so fun to see how the colors play with each other in different ways simply by repositioning them. The hardest part about this project is narrowing down your seven color combo from the 30 color Hue + Me palette!

My biggest advice for choosing colors for this project is to pay attention to the contrast between them. The contrast between both the colors and the shades (lightness/darkness) is what makes the finished piece so dynamic and striking. Notes: Blanket is worked in six blocks that are seamed together. Each block is worked modularly by working into the side edge of the existing work. Each part is worked in back and forth rows – turn at the end of each row. To change colors when indicated, work the final yarn over of the previous stitch with the new color. The ch 1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a st and is used in place of the typical ch 3 at the beginning of double crochet rows to keep the side edges straighter. For parts 1 and 2 only, work the ch 1 a little loosely to allow for more stretch along the bias edges.

Part 1

With first color, ch 2.

Row 1: Dc 3 in 2nd ch from hook. (3 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1 loosely, dc 3 in 1st st, dc 1, dc 3 in last st. (7 sts)

Row 3: Ch 1 loosely, dc 2 in 1st st, dc to last st, dc 2 in last st. (9 sts)

Row 4: Ch 1 loosely, dc 3 in 1st st, dc to last st, dc 3 in last st. (13 sts)

Rows 5-12: Rep rows 3 and 4, 4 more times. (37 sts)

Do not fasten off.

Part 2

Change to next color.

Row numbers will restart for simplicity.

Row 1: Ch 1 loosely, dc3tog, dc to last 3 sts, dc3tog. (33 sts)

Row 2: Ch 1 loosely, dc2tog, dc to last 2 sts, dc2tog. (31 sts)

CONSTRUCTION

Arrange blocks as per diagram below and with color A, use mattress stitch to seam them together. To do so, lace the pieces together back and forth with a long length of yarn and the tapestry needle by zigzagging from one side edge to the other. Go from the bottom up (back to front) through both legs of the stitch on one side, and from the bottom up (back to front) around the post of the row on the other side. To keep it even, follow the same principle as when working into the sides of each part of the blocks – seam together 2 sts for every row along vertical edges and 5 sts for every 7 rows of diagonal edges. The seam should be virtually invisible once the mattress stitch is pulled tight.

EDGING

With color F, RS facing, and starting at bottom right corner of block 6, ch 1 and dc 132 sts along entire right edge of blanket (44 sts per block; 2 sts per row along vertical edges and 7 sts per 5 rows along diagonal edges). Turn here and at the end of each following row.

Next row: Ch 1, dc across row.

Fasten off.

Flip work back over so RS is facing and rotate work to begin working across top edge of blanket. Join color E in the top right corner. Ch 1 and dc 112 sts along entire top edge of blanket (4 sts across edging just worked + 54 sts per block; 2 sts per row along vertical edges and 7 sts per 5 rows along diagonal edges).

Next row: Ch 1, dc across row.

Fasten off.

Flip work back over so RS is facing and rotate work to begin working down left side edge of blanket. Join color C in the top right corner. Ch 1 and dc 136 sts along entire left edge of blanket (4 sts across edging just worked + 44 sts per block; 2 sts per row along vertical edges and 1 st per st along horizontal edges).

Next row: Ch 1, dc across row.

Fasten off.

Flip work back over so RS is facing and rotate work to begin working across bottom edge of blanket. Join color B in the top right corner. Ch 1 and dc 116 sts along entire bottom edge of blanket (4 sts across edging just worked + 54 sts per block + 4 sts across first edging worked; 2 sts per row along vertical edges and 1 st per st along horizontal edges).

Next row: Ch 1, dc across row.

Fasten off.
