Hayworth Cropped Coat
Sometimes a yarn just speaks to you, and man has Shaggy Chic spoken to me! While this may be a very specific kind of yarn that would seemingly have limited uses, I've already managed to use it for accessories, home dec, and now a garment! Meet the Hayworth Cropped Coat, my latest addition. With a cropped silhouette and bracelet length sleeves, you’ll be runway ready in this shaggy chic number that’s also suitable for holiday parties, date nights, or just running errands around town. It's so incredibly soft and snuggly, I haven't wanted to take it off since I got it off my needles! I'm so in love with this statement making coat! It's somehow giving old Hollywood, hippie rockstar groupie, and fresh modern fashion all at once. Named after Rita Hayworth, the iconic '40s and '50s movie star, you just feel instantly glam as soon as you put it on.
Since the Shaggy Chic yarn does all of the work here in terms of visual interest, the actual construction of this coat could not be more simple. First it is knit from the back bottom hem up to the shoulders, then the work is separated and knit in two pieces down to the front bottom hem. Sleeves are picked up and knit from the shoulders, then the coat is seamed from the bottom hem up to the underarms and down the underside of the sleeves. Finally, a few rows are picked up and knit around the entire center front to stabilize the fabric there and prevent it from stretching too much. This creates an angled front hemline for a more modern look.
While the silhouette is basic, there were some important and intentional decisions made during the design process. When knit in large panels, Shaggy Chic can get quite heavy and stretch out easily. For this reason I knew this piece would need seams and the aforementioned collar band to make sure it held its shape when worn. I know many people prefer seamless garments, but seams are so important to protect the longevity and wearability of your knits! My designs almost always have seams for this reason. I also chose a cropped silhouette and bracelet length sleeves to further prevent stretching by reducing the weight and drag of the fabric.
Now let's talk about how fast this baby flew off my needles! Thanks to the jumbo (category 7) weight of the yarn, Shaggy Chic works up at the speed of light. As I've mentioned with my other designs in this yarn, there is a learning curve to using it since you cannot see your stitches, but once you get the hang of it you can likely finish this whole project in a weekend! I can't wait to wear it to holiday parties and I'm so glad it's this quick to make so you can also finish it in time for all of the season's festivities. I'm already planning two outfits with it - a simple jeans and tee look elevated with heels and a cute handbag, and a slinky black dress and tights with boots. It makes such a statement on its own, that it will instantly dress up any look!

NOTES ON YARN
Faux fur yarn can be a bit tricky to work with as the stitches are not visible so dropped stitches can be nearly impossible to locate and fix. Pay attention to – and feel for – the center core of the Shaggy Chic yarn when inserting the needle to ensure you’re working into a stitch rather than just the locks of the yarn. Carefully count your stitches with each row to ensure you have the correct stitch count. To see a video that demonstrates these tips, please visit: https://www.instagram.com/p/DA06UGxOX4D/
