Bulky Slouchy Hanging Baskets
While I love designing garments and accessories, there is something extra cozy and satisfying when it comes to making something for the home. One of my favorite home decor pieces in my portfolio are my Slouchy Hanging Baskets, originally designed in worsted weight. These baskets are both functional and chic and even if they are empty I just love the way they look hanging on the wall like art. When the new color Warm Stone joined the Hue + Me palette I immediately envisioned it used for a version of these baskets, and the Bulky Slouchy Hanging Baskets were born. . First let’s talk inspo. I originally saw these baskets on Instagram displayed at the Casa Cook Rhodes hotel in Greece. I loved how effortlessly cool they looked on the walls of the hotel rooms and was determined to make them in crochet! The Slouchy Hanging Baskets pattern was released in 2020 and was one of my most popular patterns that year, so I ended up working out a knit version as well. Although I must say that I find them much more enjoyable to crochet!
While I love the simple sophistication of the solid color worsted baskets, I wanted to give the new bulky version their own personality. Since the beauty of Hue + Me is the mix-and-matchable palette (now in 36 colors!), I wanted to incorporate some colorwork. I opted for uneven stripes which felt a little more elevated than the typical even stripes, and I chose a jogless join to make the striping transition nearly invisible. One of the major downfalls with crochet is the fact that, unlike with knitting, the stitches (in general) do not sit right on top of each other so working in the round will produce a bit of a traveling seam. This was still unavoidable with this pattern but the visual seam is lessened so much on the outside with the jogless join.
The other difference with the new bulky weight version of the pattern is the edging along the top of the baskets. I loved the way the edging on my Copenhagen Baskets turned out earlier this year so I opted to use the same stitch here. It’s a fun spin on single crochet (no pun intended - you’ll see why!) that adds a really beautiful sturdy lip to the top edge. The chunkier nature of this fabric also allows these baskets to be used as floor vessels since the walls stand up much more easily than the worsted baskets, so they’re extremely versatile.
Since the Hue + Me palette is so robust and there are truly endless combinations, you can easily tailor these baskets for any interior. This makes them excellent gifts - beautiful and functional at the same time! I love to display them in my living room, but I’ve seen other makers use them for produce in the kitchen, extra toilet paper and hand towels in the bathroom, and handing bins for collecting toys and bits and bobs in the kids’ rooms.
This is an easy level crochet pattern and the techniques involved are single crochet, slip stitches, twisted single crochet, a jogless join, and working in the round.

STITCH EXPLANATION
Jj (jogless join): At the end of the round, carefully remove the hook from the loop that is on it and drop the working yarn, leaving it hanging at the back of the work. Insert the hook under both legs of the first stitch of the following round from back to front, then place the loose loop back on the hook and draw it through the stitch – it’s easiest to flip the work around to do so. Pull to elongate the loop on the hook before beginning the following round so that the first stitch is loose enough to insert the hook into for the next join at the end of that round. When working a jogless join at a color change, first work the final yarn over of the last stitch of the previous round with the new color so that the loop that is removed from the hook at the beginning of the join is in the new color. Tw sc (twisted single crochet): Insert hook into the next st, draw up a loop, rotate hook 360 degrees counterclockwise, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook. For a video tutorial demonstrating this technique, please visit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pW7aG-eGhqw&t=184s
NOTES
Baskets are worked in spiral rounds with a special jogless stripe join technique. Use a stitch marker to keep track of the start of the round. See stitch explanation for joining and color changing instruction. Pattern is written for two sizes: small (large).
