Sweet Simone Baby Blanket

Sweet Simone Baby Blanket Pattern by Two of Wands

Right before Christmas I shared a quick snap of a baby blanket on IG that a dear friend had commissioned from me for a sweet little two year old battling cancer. I was slammed with deadlines and the holidays but could not say no to this special request so I whipped it up in less than three days and overnighted it to her to get to the recipient in time for Christmas morning. When I shared it in my stories I got numerous requests for the pattern, so I’ve spent the last couple weeks re-making and perfecting the pattern for you! The Sweet Simone Baby Blanket is also joining my Purposeful Patterns collection whereby $1 from the sale of each pattern in this series will benefit a special cause. The free pattern is available below as part of the blog post, but if you purchase the PDF here, $1 will go to the St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. You can also purchase the full yarn kit from Lion Brand here.

While the original blanket I made was pink and worked up in Heartland yarn, I opted for a more neutral color for the official pattern and switched up the yarn as well - I love the way Color Theory in Bone makes this such a soft and soothing project and finished piece.

In terms of inspo, I wanted the main fabric to be simple and meditative. I imagined this blanket being crocheted by a parent, grandparent, friend, or loved one with a sick little one in need of something calming and soothing. The double crochet stitch in this extra soft yarn was the perfect combo. I added the bobbles as a tactile squishy accent, and the outer edging was inspired by tiaras. I’m not usually one for extra feminine details but I wanted this blanket to be fit for a princess!

Whether you’re the maker or the recipient, this blanket is sure to bring a loving energy and a comforting feel. Deciding to add this piece to my Purposeful Patterns collection was also a no-brainer. I chose St Jude’s as it is the premier institution for childhood cancer research and treatment, which felt more than fitting given the recipient of the original blanket. Did you know that through the sales of Vanna’s Choice, Lion Brand has also donated over $2 million to St Jude’s? What makes this place even more special is that patients are not charged for care. Families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food!

I love that this blanket is not only super sweet and beautiful to make and display, but it is also meaningful and doing good in the world. It is a small contribution, but every dollar adds up! I look forward to designing more pieces to add to the Purposeful Patterns initiative this year.

NOTES

Blanket base is worked flat in back and forth rows – turn at the end of each row. Edging is worked around the perimeter after base is complete, first in joined, turned rounds and then in joined, un-turned rounds. The ch 2 at the beginning of each dc row of the base counts as a stitch – therefore, skip the first stitch of the row and work the final dc in the top of the turning ch of the row below to maintain an even stitch count. Chart is provided for edging.

BASE

Ch 96.

Row 1: Starting in 3rd ch from hook, dc across row. (95 sts)

Rows 2-64: Ch 2 (counts as a st), dc across row.

Do not fasten off.
